Where did it happen?
The incident took place at Rangajan near North Lakhimpur town when one Rafiqual Islam threw acid on Rehena Begum and Nureja Begum while they were asleep.
The victims were rushed to the Lakhimpur Medical College Hospital soon after the heinous incident took place. Meanwhile, a case has been filed against the culprit in the North Lakhimpur police station.
It is sad to witness such heinous crimes even after emphasising so much on stricter laws and harsher punishments. Tragically, our nation tops the global charts when it comes to acid attacks targeting women. The victims here are attacked over domestic or land disputes, because of rejected marriage proposals, or spurned sexual advances.
As per a report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) found that between 2014 and 2018, there have been nearly 1, 500 victims of acid attacks in the country.
