Assam is taking steps to ensure the safety of tourists visiting the state by introducing a dedicated “tourist police” force. This initiative comes in response to the increase in visitor numbers since the COVID-19 pandemic began last year.

Assam Introduces Tourist Police to Boost Visitor Safety

The newly passed Assam Tourism (Development and Registration) Bill, 2024, includes provisions for establishing tourist police units and stations to protect tourists. The state aims to create a comprehensive framework for the tourism sector, requiring all accommodation facilities to register with the tourism department.

Several other states in India, including Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, and Maharashtra, have already implemented tourist police forces. Although the tourist police scheme is in its early stages in Assam, officials assure that it will be promptly initiated. These dedicated officers will patrol various tourist spots to ensure visitors’ safety and well-being.

The initiative to introduce tourist police across the country was initially rolled out in 2022, following directives from the Union Ministry of Tourism. Assam’s efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure and promote its unique attractions have contributed to its popularity among travelers. In 2023, the state welcomed 98.31 lakh tourists, a significant increase from the previous year, indicating the growing appeal of Assam as a tourist destination.
