In a deeply disturbing crime that has left the entire state of Assam reeling, a man from Chirang district committed a gruesome murder by beheading his wife and surrendering to police with her severed head. The shocking event took place in the Runikhata area of Chirang and has sparked outrage, fear, and a renewed call for awareness around domestic violence and mental health in the region.
According to police officials in Chirang, the accused, whose identity has been withheld for investigative reasons, carried out the brutal act early in the morning and calmly made his way to the Runikhata police station carrying the severed head of his wife in a plastic bag. He reportedly confessed to the murder upon arrival and was immediately taken into custody.
Chirang Police Launch Full-Scale Investigation
The Chirang police have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident. Preliminary information suggests that the man used a sharp weapon, likely a machete, to commit the murder following a domestic argument. The woman, believed to be in her mid-thirties, was found dead in their home, with the rest of her body discovered by authorities shortly after the accused turned himself in.
Speaking to the media, a senior police officer from Chirang stated, “We are treating this as a premeditated and extremely violent crime. The accused has admitted to the act. A psychological evaluation will be part of the ongoing investigation.”

An FIR under IPC Section 302 (murder) has been registered at the Runikhata police station. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination at the district hospital in Chirang.
Shockwaves Through the Community
The small village where the murder occurred is struggling to cope with the horror. Residents described the couple as reclusive, with occasional disputes. “We never expected this. It’s something out of a nightmare,” said a neighbor.
Civil society groups in the region have urged the government to offer immediate psychological counseling and support to the affected family, including the couple’s children.
Rising Domestic Violence in Rural Assam
Though this crime is extreme, it is symptomatic of a troubling trend in the region — increasing domestic violence in underdeveloped and underserved areas. According to recent NCRB data, rural Assam has seen a steady rise in crimes involving family members.
Activists believe poor access to mental health services, low awareness about legal rights, and the absence of social support systems contribute to such extreme outcomes.
“This is not just about one man’s actions,” said Ruma Das, a women’s rights activist from Kokrajhar. “It’s about a pattern of neglect — of abuse that goes unchecked until it explodes.”
Legal and Psychological Assessment
Authorities have stated that the accused will be subjected to multiple rounds of psychiatric assessments. While early observations suggest that he was aware of his actions, mental instability cannot be ruled out at this stage.
Legal experts suggest the case could move quickly through the courts, given the nature of the crime. If tried under the “rarest of rare” clause, the accused could face the maximum penalty available under Indian law.
The Road Ahead for Chirang
This murder has cast a dark shadow over Chirang, a district known more for its natural beauty than violent crime. Civil society and authorities alike now face the challenge of addressing not just the aftermath of this horror, but also the root causes — including domestic violence, mental health issues, and the silence that often surrounds them.
The people of Chirang are demanding answers — and more importantly, change. Stronger protective laws, better counseling access, and widespread community education could help ensure that Chirang never again witnesses such a brutal crime.
This incident has ignited discussions about the lack of mental health support and awareness in rural pockets of the state. More than just a police matter, it has become a call for long-term investment in education, gender sensitization, and crisis intervention programs.
While law enforcement continues its investigation, residents of this otherwise quiet district are grappling with the emotional fallout. Local leaders are pushing for systemic reforms to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
