AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal has defended his actions against recent remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Speaking to reporters in Goalpara, Ajmal refuted claims that his visits to sites associated with Srimanta Sankardev Sangha were motivated by religious posturing.

Ajmal criticized Sarma’s stance on idol worship, asserting that followers of Srimanta Sankardev’s teachings, known as Sankaris, do not engage in such practices. He further challenged Sarma’s assertion that his visits caused the Chief Minister sleepless nights, stating his intention to continue visiting such places until Sarma understands the true essence of Sankari beliefs.
“The Chief Minister of Assam is not Sankari,” Ajmal said referring to followers of Srimanta Sankardev’s teachings. He pointedly criticized Sarma’s adherence to idol worship, asserting that Sankaris do not worship idols, a core tenet of Sankardev’s philosophy. Ajmal further challenged Sarma’s assertion that his visits caused the Chief Minister sleepless nights, defiantly stating, “If that is the case, I will go again and again to such places until the Chief Minister understands the true meaning of Sankari.”
Ajmal’s response follows Sarma’s remarks during the 93rd Annual Session of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha in Rangia, where Sarma warned against welcoming individuals with ideologies contradictory to Srimanta Sankardev’s essence onto its revered platform, singling out Ajmal as an example. Sarma expressed disappointment in Ajmal’s stance on women’s rights, referencing statements where Ajmal allegedly advocated for restrictive practices like the wearing of burqas and disparaged women. Sarma’s remarks resonated with the ethos of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha, dedicated to upholding the cultural and spiritual legacy of Srimanta Sankardev.
