Amidst the relentless grip of a scorching heatwave across Tripura and neighboring regions, the Sepahijala Zoological Park in the Sepahijala District of Tripura has proactively initiated measures to safeguard the welfare of its diverse wildlife.
Tripura Zoo Takes Proactive Measures
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, zoo authorities have swiftly implemented a series of initiatives aimed at mitigating the discomfort caused by the soaring temperatures for the animals under their care.
In a concerted effort to combat dehydration and heat stress, the zoo management has introduced a range of measures. Notably, seasonal fruits such as watermelons, cucumbers, and gourds are being offered to the animals to aid in hydration and cooling.
Dr. Keshab Debnath, the Zoo Doctor, underscored the significance of these actions, stating, “In the Sipahijala Zoological Park, animals are feeling the brunt of the summer heat. We had made prior preparations, ensuring an ample supply of water. During this summer, all herbivores and omnivores are being provided with seasonal fruits like watermelons, among others. Meanwhile, carnivores are benefiting from ice blocks placed in their resting areas. Additionally, regular sprinkling of cold water and administration of ORS mixture are being carried out to combat the heat. Despite the challenges posed by the heatwaves, we are dedicated to ensuring the comfort of our animal residents.”
In addition to the provision of ice cubes and cold-water splashes to directly alleviate heat stress, the zoo is diligently changing water levels in various enclosures, ensuring a constant supply of fresh and cool water to the animals. These efforts, complemented by the administration of Oral Rehydration Solutions and other preventive measures, aim to uphold the health and well-being of the zoo’s inhabitants during this testing period.
