Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that only one person from the Barak Valley has applied for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Sarma stated to the media, “There is nothing called CAA, no one has applied for it from the state…As of date, only one person from Barak Valley has applied for citizenship application under CAA.”

Sarma emphasized that the widespread protests against CAA were rooted in misconception, and those who protested must now provide explanations. He added, “So many days have passed after the implementation of CAA, only one application has come to the fore from Assam…but they said that people will come to the state in trucks full of people.”
The Chief Minister accused certain groups of exploiting emotions for political gains, asserting that the reality contradicts their claims. Using the Sonari constituency as an example, Sarma highlighted the lack of citizenship applications from Bengali-speaking communities, challenging the narrative of mass migration predicted by CAA opponents. He further claimed, “They said that people will come to the state in trucks full of people.”
In related developments, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a case against CAA filed by the Coordination Committee on April 9th, further bolstering opposition to the legislation. Dr. Gohain has a history of activism against CAA, having faced sedition charges in January 2019 for his participation in protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
