In a significant move towards public health and responsible healthcare practices, the Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has approved the Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill, 2024.

Assam Cabinet Approves Bill Targeting ‘Magical Healing’ Practices

This legislation targets the eradication of harmful “magical healing” practices often exploited for congenital conditions such as deafness, blindness, and autism.

The Chief Minister, in a social media post, said, “It will prohibit such healing sessions completely and provide strong punitive action against ‘healers’ extorting the poor and downtrodden people in the name of treatment.”

In addition to this legislation, the Assam Cabinet has also taken strides towards sustainable development and administrative reforms. Ten cities/towns have been selected for this sustainable development programme. This will be initiated to address various development challenges and enhance the quality of life for the people of Assam.

In addition, the government has approved amendments to the Assam Municipal Act, 1956. This clearly defines roles and responsibilities within the state municipal cadres. Moreover, the Assam Village Defence Organisation (Amendment) Bill, 2024 aims to enhance the performance and functionalities of VDOs, contributing to overall community safety and security.
