Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day visit to Assam starting from March 8, as confirmed by an official statement on Wednesday. During his stay, he plans to experience the wilderness of Kaziranga National Park with a jungle safari scheduled for the morning of March 9.
PM Modi’s Visit to Assam
Assam’s Forest and Environment Minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary, has overseen preparations for the visit, ensuring arrangements for both jeep and elephant safaris inside the park.
The occasion coincides with Kaziranga’s celebration of its golden jubilee as a national park, marking fifty years since its declaration in February 1974. In addition to his wildlife adventure, Prime Minister Modi’s itinerary includes significant engagements in Jorhat on March 9. He is slated to unveil a towering bronze statue honoring the legendary Ahom general, Lachit Barphukan. Furthermore, Modi will lay the foundation stone of Sivasagar Medical College and partake in a house-warming ceremony for 5.5 lakh homes constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
A public meeting is also scheduled at Meleng Meteli Pothar in Jorhat, where he is expected to address the gathering.
Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had earlier visited the memorial of Lachit Barphukan, expressing plans to develop the area into a Lachit Barphukan Cultural Centre, accompanied by two museums highlighting the Ahom era and a war museum showcasing artefacts from that period. Lachit Barphukan is revered in Assam’s history for his pivotal role in defeating the Mughal Army during the 1671 naval ‘Battle of Saraighat’ on the River Brahmaputra.
