Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a strong warning to Badruddin Ajmal, the chief of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), cautioning him against practicing ‘magical healing’, which is banned. Sarma stated that Ajmal could face arrest if found violating the law.

Assam CM Warns AIUDF Leader Against ‘Magical Healing

The Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill, 2024, makes such offenses cognizable and non-bailable. Under the law, a first-time offender could be imprisoned for up to one year, extendable to three years, along with a fine of ₹50,000, or both.

Sarma emphasized that the directives of the Assembly, which prohibit these practices, must be followed, despite AIUDF legislators defending Ajmal’s spiritual endeavours. The AIUDF leader is known for performing rituals like blowing into water bottles, believed by some to have healing properties.

However, Sarma reiterated that the Assembly has banned such practices to protect public health. The Bill, aimed at curbing traditional healing with hidden agendas, passed during the final day of the Assam budget session last month. Despite opposition from religious organizations in the Northeast, Sarma remains steadfast in implementing the law. The North East Catholic Research Forum (NECRF) has urged Sarma to address concerns about organizations targeting Christians and tribals and reconsider certain terms used in the Act.
