In a significant move towards promoting girls’ education, the Assam budget has earmarked Rs 240 crore to support the education of 10 lakh girls in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this allocation under the Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina scheme, emphasizing its importance for the empowerment of young girls. As part of the scheme, girls entering Class XI will receive Rs 10,000 as admission incentive, while those enrolling in graduation and post-graduation programs will receive Rs 12,500 and Rs 15,000 respectively.

Chief Minister Sarma took to social media to underscore the initiative’s significance, stating that it ensures brighter futures for girls by providing financial assistance for higher education. This initiative is in line with the central government’s focus on education and youth empowerment.

Additionally, the interim budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocates Rs 73,498 crore to the Department of School Education and Literacy for the fiscal year 2024-25, marking the highest-ever budget for the department and reflecting a significant increase from the previous fiscal year’s estimates.

In addition to supporting girls’ education, the Assam budget under the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijaan scheme also allocates Rs 1,010 crore to promote entrepreneurship, benefiting over 1 lakh youth in the state. Micro-entrepreneurs will receive financial support ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in installments. State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, in tabling the state budget for 2024-25, highlighted its realistic approach to addressing the state’s needs. Last year, Neog presented a budget with an aggregate expenditure estimated at Rs 3.21 lakh crore for the year. The budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will continue till February 28.
