Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a strong warning to Badruddin Ajmal, the leader of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), regarding his marriage plans. Sarma stated on March 29 that Ajmal should get married before the upcoming elections if he plans to do so again. Sarma assured that attending Ajmal’s wedding before the elections would be legal under current laws.

However, after the elections, with the enforcement of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the situation would change. Sarma emphasized that the UCC would make polygamy illegal in Assam, and any attempt by Ajmal to marry multiple times would face legal consequences, potentially leading to arrest.

The Chief Minister’s comments came after Badruddin Ajmal, over 74 years old, made controversial remarks about his eligibility for marriage. Ajmal asserted that despite his age, he still considers himself young enough to marry again and proclaimed his authority by stating that even the Chief Minister could not stop him from marrying.

His comments received criticism from Congress leaders. A Congress leader from Dhubri condemned Ajmal’s remarks as “third-class talks”, especially inappropriate during the month of Ramzan. Another Congress leader, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, expressed surprise at Ajmal’s statements, highlighting his age, familial responsibilities, and the sanctity of Ramzan.
