Mukha Shilpa, with its origins dating back to the 1500s, was introduced by Saint Sankardeva, a revered cultural figure in medieval Assam, who promoted Neo-Vaisnavism, fostering devotion and social unity through art. These masks not only serve as artistic expressions but also represent the local socio-religious life of Majuli, using indigenous resources and acting as visual narratives of Vaisnavism.
The tradition of Mukha Shilpa continues to thrive, upheld by skilled craftsmen in the Satras (monasteries) and villages across Majuli. Concurrently, Majuli’s Manuscript Paintings vividly depict Hindu epic tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana, particularly focusing on Lord Krishna’s stories from the Bhagavata Purana, showcasing the island’s rich cultural heritage and artistic prowess.
