Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi, led by billionaire co-founder Lei Jun, is making bold strides into the automotive industry with its upcoming SU7 electric vehicle (EV).

Xiaomi Revs Up Electric Vehicle Ambitions

Lei Jun aims to position it as a global leader in automobiles within the next 15 to 20 years, investing $10 billion to disrupt the market similarly to its smartphone ventures a decade ago. The SU7 is touted to rival premium EVs from Tesla and Porsche, boasting advanced features such as autonomous driving capabilities, a cutting-edge motor, and sophisticated battery management systems.

Equipped with software and electronics, the SU7 will feature a 101 kWh battery supplied by CATL, offering an impressive range of 800 km (about 500 miles). It will be available in single or dual motor configurations, with the top-spec AWD version delivering 475 kW of power for lightning-fast acceleration and a top speed of 265 km/h (165 mph). Xiaomi’s partnership with BYD and CATL underscores its strategic approach to sourcing components from established players in the EV ecosystem.

However, Xiaomi faces challenges in navigating China’s evolving regulatory landscape, including stricter controls on manufacturing permits for new entrants. To navigate these hurdles, Xiaomi has partnered with the state-owned Beijing Automotive Holding Group to produce its EVs.

Despite regulatory challenges and intense competition in the crowded EV market, Xiaomi’s ambitious foray into automobiles represents a significant step towards diversifying its product portfolio and cementing its position as a key player in the global tech and automotive industries.
