In a decisive national address on May 12, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India’s recent military operation, codenamed “Operation Sindoor,” signifies a transformative shift in the nation’s counter-terrorism policy. This operation, launched in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed 26 civilian lives, marks a new era in India’s approach to national security.

A Firm Stance Against Terrorism

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India would no longer tolerate acts of terrorism, particularly those emanating from Pakistan. He stated that any future dialogues with Pakistan would focus solely on terrorism and the status of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). “Talks and trade cannot go with terror,” Modi asserted, highlighting India’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.

Operation Sindoor: A Strategic Military Response

Operation Sindoor was initiated on May 7, 2025, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. The Indian Air Force conducted precision strikes using Rafale jets equipped with SCALP missiles and AASM Hammer glide bombs. The operation lasted 23 minutes and aimed to dismantle camps of militant groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. According to Indian officials, the strikes resulted in the elimination of at least 100 militants, including Abdul Rauf Azhar, a senior Jaish-e-Mohammed commander.

Symbolism Behind “Sindoor”

The operation’s codename, “Sindoor,” holds significant cultural symbolism. Sindoor, a red powder worn by married Hindu women, represents marital commitment. The name was chosen to honor the women widowed in the Pahalgam attack, where male tourists were specifically targeted. This nomenclature underscores India’s resolve to protect its citizens and uphold their dignity.

International Reactions and Ceasefire

Following the operation, tensions escalated between India and Pakistan, leading to a brief conflict involving missile, drone, and artillery exchanges. A ceasefire was brokered on May 10, 2025, with both nations agreeing to halt hostilities. However, Prime Minister Modi warned that the ceasefire is conditional and that India would resume military action if Pakistan continues to support terrorism.

Domestic Support and Political Implications

The Indian government’s decisive action has garnered widespread domestic support. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised Modi’s leadership, stating that Operation Sindoor symbolizes a vow to protect the nation’s honor and a commitment to respond decisively to any aggression.

A New Doctrine in Counter-Terrorism

Operation Sindoor represents a paradigm shift in India’s counter-terrorism strategy. By adopting a proactive and assertive approach, India aims to deter future terrorist activities and send a clear message to adversaries. The operation underscores India’s willingness to take bold actions to safeguard its sovereignty and the safety of its citizens.
