The six-lane Basistha-Jalukbari stretch of Guwahati Bypass has been inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, marking its completion almost five months ahead of schedule. Costing Rs. 300 Crore, the expanded stretch is anticipated to alleviate congestion in Guwahati city for nearly a decade.
Guwahati Bypass Expansion
This project includes the construction of four flyovers at Basistha, Lokhra, Gorchuk, and Boragaon, as well as a vehicular underpass at Lalmati, covering a total distance of 16.448 kilometers. The road has been widened from four lanes to six lanes, with three lanes on each side and service lanes on both sides, along with roadside drains.
The budgets allocated for the construction of the four flyovers are: Boragaon – Rs. 25.32 Crore, Gorchuk – Rs. 25.64 Crore, Lokhra – Rs. 31.83 Crore, and Basistha – Rs. 28.89 Crore. Acknowledging the challenges posed by traffic snarls and long travel times on the previous four-lane stretch, CM Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi saying, “Aware of this situation, PM Modi and Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had approved a project for converting the Khanapara to Jalukbari stretch which is 17-km to 6 lanes.” With the completion of this initiative, commuters can expect smoother travel experiences and reduced congestion at key junction points along the Guwahati Bypass.
