The well- known Delta variant of coronavirus also known as the “Indian variant”, as it was first found in India has now arrived in the Northeast as cases of Delta variant have been found in the two Northeastern states of Manipur and Mizoram for the very first time.
The Delta variant was found in 18 out of 20 samples from Manipur and sent to Hyderabad Laboratory. It was confirmed that in four samples from Mizoram which was sent to Kolkata for examination is also confirmed. The four patients who were infected with the Delta variant were from Aizawl district of Mizoram. The samples of these people were sent to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics for further examination.
Following this, the state government in neighbouring Assam has also started a special vaccination campaign for the people who is suffering from diabetes, cancer, and other serious diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the Delta variant is becoming globally dominant. WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan also informed that the delta variant is a matter of grave concern for the global community due to being highly contagious. Cases of Delta variant have been now registered in more than 70 countries all over the world.
