Early Deployment and Key Battles
1 NAGA Battalion:
1 NAGA reached Dras on May 11, 1999, becoming the first battalion of the Indian Army to be inducted in Kargil after the scant information about infiltrators was obtained. The battalion was tasked with evicting the infiltrators. Immediate patrols were launched to probe the snow-clad mountain tops. During the attack on Tololing in June 1999, 1 NAGA provided a firm base to 2 Rajputana Rifles and prevented the enemy from inducting reinforcements.
After capturing Tololing, 1 NAGA was assigned to capture the enemy post BLACK TOOTH, a neighboring hill feature. During this fierce battle, Sepoy Asuli Mao was conferred the Vir Chakra, and Subedar Heni Mao was awarded the Sena Medal Gallantry for their acts of valor. By mid-July 1999, 1 NAGA secured the PIMPLE complex, later renamed Naga Hill, in honor of the determination and fortitude of the Naga soldiers. A daring daylight attack on Point 5060 cleared the area of all intruders, earning the battalion the Northern Command Unit Appreciation, Battle Honour ‘DRAS’, and Theatre Honour ‘KARGIL’.
2 NAGA Battalion:
On June 27, 1999, 2 NAGA was inducted into the Mashkoh Valley after a successful Counter-Insurgency Operation tenure in Northern Kashmir. The unit captured Twin Bump as part of the Pt 4875 complex in a daring daylight operation. The battalion raided enemy mortar positions, resulting in significant enemy casualties and the capture of arms, ammunition, equipment, and documents. Despite hostile terrain and heavy enemy fire, the battalion moved up under speculative fire and successfully captured the Twin Bump complex. The unit’s exemplary courage during ‘OP VIJAY’ earned it the ‘BATTLE HONOUR – MASHKOH’ and ‘THEATRE HONOUR – KARGIL’.
Acts of Heroism and Sacrifice
One of the most notable heroes from the Naga Regiment during the Kargil War was Captain N. Kenguruse, MVC (Posthumous). On June 28, 1999, at Lone Hill in the Drass sector, he led a platoon tasked with recapturing the black rock post at an altitude of 16,000 feet in freezing temperatures. Displaying unwavering courage under intense enemy fire, Captain Kenguruse’s selflessness and determination epitomized the sacrifices made by countless heroes during the conflict.
