Discovery of the Infant and Her Family
The devastating earthquake that struck Jindayris, Syria on Wednesday has resulted in numerous fatalities, but also in one miraculous survival. An infant girl was found 10 hours after the quake amidst the rubble and debris with her mother, Abu Hadiya, who had died. The infant’s father and four siblings also lost their lives in the disaster, leaving the baby as an orphan.
The Infant’s Condition
The infant girl was taken to Cihan Hospital in Afrin for treatment, where she was given the name Aya, which means “a sign from God” in Arabic. Despite suffering from hypothermia, bruises, and cuts, Aya was found to be in stable condition and improving daily. The doctor in charge of her treatment, Dr. Hani Maarouf, stated that Aya had no damage to her spine, contrary to initial fears, and that she would have died if left in the rubble for another hour.
Aya’s great-uncle, Salah al-Badran, has stepped up to take care of her once she is released from the hospital. However, his own home in Jenderis was destroyed in the earthquake and he, along with his household of 11, is currently living in a tent. Despite the difficult living conditions, al-Badran is determined to provide Aya with a loving and stable home.
Footage of the Rescue
The dramatic footage of Aya being rescued from the rubble has circulated widely on social media, captivating people around the world with the story of this tiny survivor. In the video, a man can be seen running with the dust-covered infant, her umbilical cord still attached, as another man throws a blanket to cover her. Aya’s body temperature had fallen to 95 degrees Fahrenheit at the time of her rescue, but the prompt medical attention she received at the hospital helped to stabilize her condition.
The earthquake in Jindayris resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life. In addition to Aya’s family, countless others have lost their homes, belongings, and loved ones. The area was also hit by a winter storm at the time of the quake, making the conditions even more difficult for rescue and recovery efforts.
The Infant’s New Home
Despite the tragedy and hardship, the story of Aya serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of hope in the face of adversity. Aya’s survival and adoption by her great-uncle provide a glimmer of light amidst the darkness, a sign of a brighter future ahead.
“Had the girl been left for an hour more, she would have died,” Maarouf said. She was covered in bruises and cuts and had hypothermia, he added. The area had been hit with a winter storm at the time the earthquake struck. Her great uncle, al-Badran, will take her home once she is able to be released, however his own house in Jenderis was leveled in the quake as well. He and his household of 11 are living in a tent, he said.
In conclusion, the earthquake in Jindayris, Syria has had a profound impact on the lives of those affected. The loss of life, homes, and belongings is immense, but amidst the tragedy, the story of Aya’s survival and adoption serves as a source of inspiration and hope. The outpouring of support for Aya and her great-uncle, as well as the other victims of the disaster, highlights the power of humanity to come together and support each other in times of need.
