This unusual phenomena that people call a “a portal to hell’ seems like a drain hole that swallows 48,000 cubic feet of water per second.  This occurs when the water level in the reservoir rises above 15 feet. A wide hole like structure opened up in California’s Berryessa Reservoir. The 72 feet wide and 245 feet long hole was witnessed again by the people.

This is not the first time that ‘portal to hell’ has opened before. People has witnessed this phenomena was last observed in the year 2018 and 2019. The unusual spinning vortex was witnessed this time in the Eastern Napa Valley of California.

The tunnel on the Napa Valley was built in order to control the flow of water and was built way back in 1950s. The site has generated a lot of tourist over the years who come all the way to witness this unusual phenomena that they call as a portal to hell. The other name of the tunnel is The glory hole.

The reservoir holds up to 52.1 billion gallons of water and spills out the excess of water into the spillway. The fullest capacity of the reservoir was reached up to its maximum level in 2018.

What is Portal to Hell

This phenomena occurs when the water in the reservoir exceeds the maximum level thus creating a whirlpool of a huge hole. The hole can be 72 feet long and 245 feet wide and can swallow 48,000 cubic feet of water per second. This generally occurs at a time when the water level rises up to 15 feet.

A similar looking hole emerged back in the 1970s when a pit was formed due to a gas expedition in Soviet. This led to the whole ground collapsing. The hole is still evident in the Desert of karakum in Ashgabat. The hole was put on fire to prevent the natural gas from spreading and till date the hole is burning.
