The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive weather forecast for the Northeast region, predicting varied weather patterns over the next few days. This forecast encompasses light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and hot and humid conditions across several states.

Rainfall and Thunderstorm Alert

According to the latest IMD bulletin, parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to experience light to moderate rain. Isolated areas in Assam and Meghalaya are also expected to witness light rainfall. The IMD has issued a thunderstorm and lightning warning for isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, urging residents to take necessary precautions.

Specific Weather Conditions in Assam

The weather forecast for Assam highlights the likelihood of hot and humid conditions prevailing across the state. The IMD predicts that these conditions are due to partly cloudy skies and high solar insulation during the day. Guwahati, the state’s largest city, is expected to experience a partly cloudy sky with occasional spells of rain or thundershowers. The maximum temperature in Guwahati is anticipated to reach around 36°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to hover around 24°C.

Temperature Projections and Alerts

Over the next two to three days, Assam is set to experience significantly high temperatures, with maximum temperatures potentially exceeding 35°C in several districts. The IMD warns that temperatures across various parts of the state may be 5°C to 7°C above normal until May 25. This spike in temperature is attributed to the prevailing partly cloudy conditions during the day, which result in high solar insulation.

Additionally, the IMD has issued an ‘orange alert’ for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Assam on May 27. Rainfall in the range of approximately 64.5 to 204.4 mm is expected, which could lead to localized flooding and other related disruptions. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather information and prepare accordingly.

Broader Implications for the Northeast

The IMD’s forecast underscores the need for residents across the Northeast to stay vigilant and prepared for a range of weather conditions. In states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, light to moderate rainfall could impact daily activities, while thunderstorms and lightning pose additional risks.

In Meghalaya, where light rainfall is expected in isolated areas, residents should also be aware of the potential for thunderstorms and lightning. The mixed weather patterns highlight the complex climatic conditions often experienced in the Northeast during this time of year.

Precautionary Measures and Recommendations

Given the forecasted weather conditions, it is crucial for residents to take several precautionary measures:

  1. Monitor Weather Updates: Regularly check IMD updates and local news for the latest weather information.
  2. Prepare for Thunderstorms: Secure loose objects that could be affected by strong winds and avoid open areas during thunderstorms.
  3. Stay Hydrated and Cool: In areas expecting high temperatures, ensure adequate hydration and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
  4. Flood Preparedness: In regions under the orange alert for heavy rainfall, prepare for potential flooding by securing essential supplies and having an evacuation plan in place.

Conclusion

The IMD’s forecast for the Northeast highlights a period of varied and potentially severe weather conditions. With light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and significant temperature variations expected, residents must remain informed and take appropriate precautions. The upcoming days will require vigilance and preparedness to navigate the diverse weather patterns predicted for the region.
