On Thursday morning, the first ever electric train (a parcel train) arrived at Kamakhya station, Assam in a historic event. Trains with electric locomotives had been arriving from Katihar and Malda up to New Coochbehar, when the electric locomotive was disconnected and a diesel locomotive was attached for the train’s further journey.

Now that the Railway Electrification works have been completed and the section up to Kamakhya has been commissioned, these trains will be able to travel directly to Kamakhya without changing traction.

Authorization accessed

The stretch from New Coochbehar to Kamakhya was opened for Electric Traction operation after successful completion of railway electrification works up to Kamakhya station and authorization issued by CRS/N. F. Circle after inspection from October 7 to 9.

The N. F. Railway now has 760 route kilometres and 1701 track kilometres of electrified track. The Central Organization for Railway Electrification and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited were in charge of these projects.

“As a result, there will be direct connectivity on Electric Traction from New Delhi to Kamakhya without the need to change locomotives along the way,” NFR stated in a statement.

Benefits and advantages

At this point, it’s worth noting the numerous inherent advantages of electric traction, such as higher speed potential enabling faster trains, increased energy efficiency with higher power to weight ratio, regenerative breaking, higher hauling capacity with high horse power locomotives, improved reliability and line capacity, pollution-free mode of transportation, cost effective due to lower maintenance and operating costs, and so on.
