Deforestation in name of Development: Meghalaya’s Pine trees being cut for road expansion; CM Sangma orders immediate halt

The lush green hills of Meghalaya can leave anyone mesmerised, but its beautiful tall pine trees facing the wrath in the name of development. Deforestation is never the right answer to any developmental project.

Recently upper Shillong’s pine trees being cut down for expansion of Umshyrpi- Tambrail Road. A video of cutting down of these beautiful pine trees, soon created an uproar on the internet, with many blaming the Government for destroying nature.

It soon caught the attention of Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, he later posted in social media with assurance “After the team of PWD and ACS visited the site, the iconic stretch is mostly intact and not touched. We are further examining the matter.”
