Assam: “India is a Hindi-majority nation” , Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s, statement draws flak from Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi

Gogoi alleged that CM Sarma for his “anti-national and anti-constitutional” remark should be booked under Sedition Law.

CM of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday December 2, while answering a question on CAA said that before Mughal emperor Babur, everyone in India was a Hindu.

Context to the statement by Assam CM

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that Hindus are in trouble outside India and welcomed them into the country as India is a Hindu-majority nation. He further went on to say, “Every person here was a Hindu before the Babur era.”

This statement didn’t sit well with Sibsagar MLA cum Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi. Gogoi on Friday, slammed the Chief Minister for this statement.

“In Assam, there is a dictatorship rule now. The current situation in the state is far worse than the extra-judicial murders that happened in Assam between 1998-2001. If we support the police encounter, we will be wrong. We cannot support any kind of killings. One can term it as open killing or any other killing, but the situation in Assam is very bad”,warned Gogoi.

Gogoi also put into limelight the emptying coffers of the state government claiming that the government will go bankrupt soon; and very soon they will be unable to pay wages as well.

Are such statements new?

Statements such as these have on many occasions been repeated earlier. Sarma had earlier in July asserted that Hindutva is a way of life and claimed that adherents of most religions are descendents of Hindus. “Hindutva is a way of life. How can I or anybody stop it? I has been flowing through the ages, said Sarma.

The Sibsagar MLA also mentioned that Congress and the other regional parties should come together to defeat Bharatiya Janata Party in 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.

Talks with Trinamool Congress are on, but Raijor Dal will remain as a regional party, said Akhil Gogoi
