Officials stated on Monday morning that landslides driven by heavy rains had closed the National Highway(NH) 10, shutting Sikkim off from the rest of the country.
Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel are clearing the roadway at 29 Mile in Kalimpong, West Bengal, where the incident occurred said.
The rubble from the overnight avalanche has covered about 70 meters of road, and officials say it will take some time to clean the route for one-way traffic.
Vehicles are currently being redirected over a narrower and lengthier road that travels through the Darjeeling hills, according to the officials.
The region is a difficult zone on the state’s lifeline NH-10, some 60 kilometers from the Sikkim border town of Rangpo. At least four times this monsoon, it has been closed by landslides.
