Mizoram going to set up new municipal council in Lunglei Town

On November 16, an official said, the Mizoram cabinet decided to set up a new municipal council in Lunglei town in the south-central part of the state.

The proposal of setting up Lunglei Municipal Council was unanimously approved by the Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga who chaired the meeting of council of ministers. The setting up of the municipal council was to address the problems of the people.

Lunglei Municipal Council

Lunglei Municipal Council was a long pressing demand of the people of Lunglei. It is the second largest town after Aizawl.

Lunglei now has a planning board High Powered Committee (HPC) to address the problems of the southern district to initiate a faster development process. Out of the outlay designated as discretionary funds, the HPC is empowered to establish district plans and schemes, as well as implement district-level plans. Moreover, it reviews and monitors all district-level plans and projects.

Municipal Corporation in Mizoram

Mizoram at present has only one municipal council, Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), which was earlier known as Aizawl Municipal Council.

Municipal corporation is created to govern larger cities which have a population of more than one lakh, whereas Municipal council is created to govern smaller towns and cities which have a smaller population of 25,000-1 lakhs.

Other approvals by the council of ministers

The official statement stated that the council of ministers have approved Mizoram Municipalities (Facilities to Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chairman Vice Chairman and Councillors) (Amendment) Rules, 2021.

It further approved Mizoram Road Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2021, and Administrative Reforms Committee Volume-2 report and proposal from department of personnel and administrative reforms, according to the official statement.

Moreover, it granted the proposal of renaming Kolasib rural water, sanitation and hygiene (WATSAN) sub-division to Kawnpui WATSAN sub-division and to shift its headquarters from Kolasib to Kawnpui town in the northern part of the state. They agreed upon renaming the Kolasib maintenance sub-division to the Kolasib WATSAN sub-division, the statement said.
