On Sunday, UP police reported the arrest of seven people from Baghpat in western Uttar Pradesh who have been stealing clothes off dead bodies from crematoria and burial grounds.
The news of the arrests arrives at a time when India is fighting a deadly virus that is claiming lakhs of lives.
The accused used to sell the stolen item in the markets after a good wash and ironing. They also put branded marking on the stolen clothes like bedsheets, saris, clothes stolen from the dead.
“Since they have been arrested during COVID-19 crisis, they will also be charged under the Epidemic Act among other sections of IPC,” said Alok Singh, Circle Officer.
