The Assam cabinet has initiated for the start of a “department of indigenous faith and culture” whose immediate priority would be areas of the state swamped by illegal Muslim immigrants, officials said on Saturday. This new department will repeat assertions that the state’s demography and indigenous cultures need protection from the onslaught of immigrants.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The new department will work to preserve faith and traditions, of tribal people. We are expecting a good support from Finance department for this new department in the state budget which will be tabled on July 16.”
“Our tribes and communities have their own set of beliefs, customs and practices…the Department of Indigenous Faith and Culture is aimed to preserve such practices,” said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a press conference here.
