AMRIT MAHOTSAV GREEN PARK, A “WASTE TO WONDER”, INAUGURATED IN GOVERNOR’S ADOPTED VILLAGE

Amrit Mahotsav Green Park at Topakhani in Sang Khola ward of Beng Phegyong GPU was formally inaugurated today by Governor Ganga Prasad in the presence of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Cabinet ministers, area MLA and other dignitaries.


The Amrit Mahotsav Green Park is one of the developmental initiatives of the district administration with active coordination and participation from line departments. It may be mentioned that the Beng-Phegyong GPU is adopted by the Governor of Sikkim with an aim to convert it into a model village with all required amenities.


At the outset, the Governor unveiled the plaque and inaugurated the Amrit Mahotsav Green Park.


Thereafter, the dignitaries carried out an inspection of the Amrit Mahotsav green park and visited the stalls managed by Self Help Groups.


At the stage, the programme commenced with the lighting of ceremonial lamp and offering of garland to the portrait of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati to mark the birth anniversary of the great saint and freedom fighter.


Governor Ganga Prasad, in his address, commended the active participation and support of all individuals and departments for the successful completion and inauguration of the landmark Amrit Mahotsav Green Park.


He said that he is deeply inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi for rural development, as a result of which he adopted a few villages and ensured their development. He outlined some of the key initiatives of the Raj Bhavan towards rural development.

Amrit Mahotsav Green Park Is An Asset of The GPU

He added that the Amrit Mahotsav Green Park is an asset of the GPU which will benefit the local people. He said that this is one more addition to the tourism infrastructure and amenities in the State. He urged the local people to maintain the park and ensure economic development of the area.


The Governor also highlighted the objective of celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. He urged everyone to work together for the development of the State.


Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, the guest of honour, began his address by paying his tribute to Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati on his birth anniversary. He elucidated some of the inspiring works of the freedom fighter especially in the field of education, social reforms and his emphasis on the importance of Hindi language.


The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the Governor for providing his valuable leadership and guidance towards the development of Sikkim.

The Chief Minister said that Governor Ganga Prasad is one of the senior most members of the Arya Samaj, a socio-religious organisation conceived by Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati. He added that the Governor has set an exemplary benchmark by adopting villages in the State and providing all required support for their development.


The Chief Minister also spoke on various contemporary issues concerning the State and the country. He said that Covid-19 pandemic has not yet ended and it is still necessary to take precautions and follow Covid appropriate behaviour.

Speaking about the current crisis in Ukraine, he informed that all possible effort is being made to safely evacuate the 26 students of Sikkim. He informed that there is active correspondence at the highest level to safely bring back the students from Ukraine.


The Chief Minister spoke about the current issue of pricing of milk, and emphasized that the quality of milk should be enhanced.
The Chief Minister also informed that the tender process for the construction of a 300-bedded government hospital in Singtam has been completed.


Regarding the law and order situation in the State, the chief Minister lauded the effort of Sikkim Police who he said have delivered their duty with utmost commitment and sincerity.


The Chief Minister announced that the 3% DA for government employees from July 1, 2021 to February 28, 2022 will be released within the month of March.


In conclusion, the Chief Minister thanked the Governor for the successful completion and inauguration of the Amrit Mahotsav Green Park. He congratulated everyone involved in the development of the project. He further assured support from the government for the development of added amenities around the Amrit Mahotsav green park.


The Chief Minister also assured support for further development of the GPU.


Rural Development minister Sonam Lama, in his address, highlighted the rural development initiatives and accomplishments of the present government. The minister said the State government is committed to reach out to every section of the population.

Martam-Rumtek MLA Sonam Tshering Venchungpa, in his address, expressed his gratitude to the Governor for making the Green Park a reality. He thanked the Chief Minister for his continuous support and encouragement.

He also acknowledged the active role of the panchayat, local gentry, and department officials for the accomplishment of the project. He further thanked everybody involved in making Beng-Phegyong GPU a model village.


Additional chief secretary-cum-PCCF, Forest department, M.L. Srivastava presented a brief report on the Amrit Mahotsav Green Park. He elaborated on how the barren land used as a dumping ground was converted into a playing area for children with various amenities in less than a year. He termed it as ‘waste to wonder’.


Gangtok district collector Ragul K. presented a brief report of the developmental activities under the Governor’s adopted village of Beng-Phegyong GPU. The DC then presented the progress report to the Governor and the Chief Minister.


Thereafter, the Forest department handed over the MoU of the park to the Joint Forest Management Committee for overall maintenance of the park.
The Governor then handed over the work order for establishment of the shopping stall, waiting shed and cafeteria to the district collector.


The Governor and the Chief Minister felicitated officers and staff for their active involvement in the implementation of various initiatives in the Governor’s adopted village.


Likewise, officials of Central government agencies and private companies were felicitated for their support and coordination.


The Governor and Chief Minister also felicitated students from the GPU who have excelled academically.


During the programme, Sang Khola ward panchayat Padam Sharma and Sita Sharma shared their experiences of the developmental activities in the ward, especially the Green Park.

The panchayat members offered citation to the Governor, the Chief Minister and other dignitaries as a gesture of gratitude.


During the programme, Governor Ganga Prasad also distributed blankets to BPL families and a sewing machine to a physically-challenged lady.
