UEFA has denied a request by Munich city council to illuminate Allianz Arena in rainbow colors for Wednesday’s Euro 2020 group-stage finale between Germany and Hungary to protest against Viktor Orban, the prime minister of Hungary, and his anti-LGBT policies.
The proposal to light up the stadium comes days after Hungary passed controversial legislation banning the “display and promotion of homosexuality” to under-18s.
“I find it shameful that UEFA forbids us to set an example for diversity, tolerance, respect and solidarity.” said Munich Mayor Reiter.
Other German cities, including Cologne, Frankfurt and Berlin, said they would light up their stadiums in rainbow colors during the match instead.
