On Saturday, Forest officials said that a tuskless adult elephant died after getting caught in a swamp in Assam’s Golaghat district. According to them, the elephant was stuck in the Sungihola waterbody in Khumtai area of Golaghat district on Friday morning.
Forest officials hurried to the scene and notified the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) in Kaziranga. However, it was suggested that the elephant be observed if it emerged from the bog on its own. In the evening, forest personnel observed the elephant attempting to exit the swamp but failing after several attempts.

Officials stated the officers then approached the elephant on a boat and discovered it dead. The elephant’s carcass was taken out of the wetland using a crane on July 3, they added.
Ritu Paban Borah, Assistant Conservator of Forest, was instructed to probe the death of the elephant under Section 50 (8) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
