Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek-Sands were eliminated from the women’s doubles’ second round at Wimbledon on Saturday. Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova of Russia defeated the Indo-American duo in straight sets, 4-6, 3-6.
Sania and Bethanie Mattek-Sands fought valiantly in the first set, but the Russian pair snatched the game away from them. Kudermetova and Vesnina claimed the second set with relative ease, and Sania and Mattek-Sands were eliminated from the competition.Only one of six breakpoint opportunities was converted by Sania and Mattek-Sands, who were not at their best with their serves or returns on the day.
Mattek-Sands, the oldest of the four women on court at 36, wasn’t at her best at the net, and Sania, while hitting large from the back of the court, couldn’t do enough damage at the net.Mirza will play in the second round of the mixed doubles competition alongside compatriot Rohan Bopanna, keeping her hopes alive.
