On the midnight of August 24, a landslide which has been triggered by the heavy rainfall in the Belonia district of South Tripura kills a man in his sleep while injuring two minor children.
According to the residents of the Belonia district, such a type of flood caused by heavy rainfall took place after many years.
After witnessing the situation in Belonia and grief over a youth’s death, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb announces compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the deceased’s family, with an assurance of possible assistance to the flood victims.
1 dead and 2 injured after the landslides
According to reports, a young man by the name of Nara Bhowmik died in his sleep after a house collapsed on him in the Das Para area of Belonia on Wednesday morning. Whereas two minors were injured in two separate landslides.
After receiving the news, firefighters rushed to the area, and with the assistance of local youths, they were able to successfully retrieve the body after an effort of two hours. They took his body to Belonia sub-divisional hospital for an autopsy. The body was handed over to the family following the autopsy.
Belonia SDM Manik Lal Das said the family of the deceased had been given Rs 10,000 in cash and Rs 10,000 online for assistance.
On the other hand, Rafiq Mia’s two sons Russell Mia (12) and Rahim Mia (11) were also injured in separate landslides in the same area. They were thankfully rescued with the help of local people.
Following the news, the fire brigade arrived in time. They are currently admitted to Belonia hospital for treatment. For now, doctors assure that they are safe. The SDM Das has assisted with Rs 5,000 for the treatment of the two minors.
CM’s reaction to the disaster
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb tweets that torrential rains had lashed the South Tripura district since midnight yesterday and that the situation is being maintained and monitored by the local administration while rescue workers have been deployed. He says that the Tripura government will extend all possible assistance to the victims of natural disasters.
Furthermore, Belonia MLA Arun Chandra Bhowmik said many people were trapped in their homes due to heavy rains. The administration has distributed cooked food to 282 people.
