East Sikkim bags first place but no districts in the achiever or aspirant category: NER district SDG Index Report 2021-22

Niti Aayog’s North Eastern Region (NER) District Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index Report 2021-22 releases the ranking where 103 districts were considered. Of the 103, 64 districts belong to the winner Category while 39 districts are within the Performer category. East Sikkim came first with all its districts in the Front Runner category with none in the Aspirant or Achiever Categories.

Release of the first edition of NER District SDG Index Report and Dashboard 2021-22

On Thursday, the 1st edition of the NER District SDG Index Report and Dashboard 2021-22 by NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) was launched.

At the launching event, Dr Rajiv Kumar, vice chairman, NITI Aayog states that the North Eastern Region District SDG Index could be a memorable and important milestone in our SDG journey which aims to not leave anyone behind.

Furthermore, he adds that this will strengthen SDG localization by placing the districts, most importantly, the Northeastern states at the forefront of SDG adoption, implementation, and monitoring.

Ranking based on measuring the performance of the 8 states of the North-East

With technical support from UNDP, this Index is a combination of efforts put together by NITI Aayog and the Ministry of DoNER.

The NER District SDG Index measures the performance of the districts of the eight states of Northeast i.e., Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura concerning certain criteria.

It offers an in-depth view of the social, economic, and environmental status of the region and its districts in their journey towards achieving the SDGs.

According to the report, for the ranking, 103 districts were considered, 64 districts belonged to the Front Runner category while 39 in the Performer category in the composite score and ranking of districts.

No districts within the Aspirant or Achiever categories

Despite East Sikkim bagging the primary position, all districts in Sikkim and Tripura are under the winner category while there are none for the Aspirant or Achiever category.

East Sikkim with a score of 75.87, ranks first in the region, followed by two districts in Tripura i.e., Gomati and North Tripura, each with a score of 75.73.

The score for the 103 districts ranges from 53.00 in Kiphire, Nagaland to 75.87 in East Sikkim.
