Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna’s social media remarks over the Tokyo Olympics qualifying issue were improper and deceptive, according to All India Tennis Association Secretary-General Anil Dhupar.
According to sources, the AITA had requested that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) partner Rohan Bopanna with Sumit Nagal for the doubles event at the Tokyo Games after the youngster had made the men’s singles cut earlier in July. After Sumit Nagal and Bopanna failed to secure a straight spot with their combined doubles rating, the AITA allegedly withdrew Divij Sharan’s nomination and sent Nagal and Bopanna’s names.
After Rohan Bopanna criticised the AITA for deceiving him, the media, and the public about the qualification procedure for the men’s doubles event at the Tokyo Olympics, Anil Dhupar chimed in. Sania Mirza defended the senior tennis player, claiming that India was denied a medal opportunity in the mixed doubles event due to the country’s tennis regulatory organisation.
