The state of Sikkim, on its mission to make the state plastic-free, has decided to ban single-use plastic from next year. The decision was taken by the tourism board of Sikkim.

Airlines to avoid usage of plastic water bottles

The ban will be implemented throughout the state and will include packaged mineral water. Even the airlines and other transport service providers have been asked to avoid the usage of plastic water bottles.

Alternatives to Plastic

Rather, the northeastern state will offer alternatives to plastic that are more environment-friendly and organic.

The state of Sikkim is gifted with natural resources that provide fresh and good quality drinking water. Therefore, it has taken the decision to make this change joining the state government’s campaign of banning plastic in the region.

The ban is not just limited to airlines, but even homestays have been strictly directed to adhere to the ban. The state has around 915 registered homestays.

Sikkim chief minister PS Tamang, earlier this year in October, had announced the ban on packaged mineral water from January 1, 2022, in the Himalayan state.
