Weightlifting

After returning from Tokyo, the 27-year-old weightlifter from Imphal tells Times of India, “I am in my best shape, so Paris 2024 is my target and I would like to leave Paris with gold in hand. As mentioned previously, I’m focussed on my nutrition intake and training regime to make sure that I remain a champion all the way.”

As people cheer her on with her upcoming goals and dreams, there has been a recent block to her dream.

Sadly, there has been a growing possibility of removal of weightlifting at the 2024 Paris Olympics due to the doping problem which has been going on for a long time despite restrictions and prohibitions by the IOC.

International Olympic Committee execute their power to remove a sport

Ever since the International Olympic Committee has given more power to itself to remove sports from the Olympics, the decision has been voted by the IOC members following the long ongoing issues with weightlifting and boxing.

Accordingly, if its administration doesn’t suit a choice made by the Olympic body’s executive board or if it “acts in a way likely to tarnish the reputation of the Olympic movement” the IOC can now remove a sport.

Therefore, weightlifting may need an opportunity of losing its place at the 2024 Paris Olympics thanks to long-term doping problems and governance issues. The International Weightlifting Federation was led for 2 decades until last year by longtime IOC member Tamas Ajan.

Previously, boxing at the Tokyo Games was taken out of the International Boxing Association’s control in 2019 after doubts about the integrity of Olympic bouts and IOC concerns about its presidential elections.

On Sunday, unanimously approved the charter changes that successively could lead on to the top of weightlifting’s long association with the Olympic Games.

Moreover, the IOC had warned the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to make the necessary reforms last year after corruption scandals and doping.
