Novak Djokovic‘s claim to an unprecedented 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open seems to have taken a halt. On Thursday, the vaccine-sceptic Djokovic was detained on arrival at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport after having failed to provide appropriate evidence of double vaccination or a medical exception.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic claimed that Djokovic was a victim of ‘political witch hunt’.

He also reiterated that the Australian ambassador had been contacted twice by Serbian authorities and Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic will personally be in touch with a senior member of Australia’s Home Affairs department.

The 34-year-old’s lawyers are appealing the decision which if fails would see him deported from Australia.

Notably, Djokovic flew into Melbourne on Wednesday and was granted medical exemption by the Australian Open organisers.

This act has drawn criticism from Djokovic’s fans who has termed it as corona fascism.
