On Monday, the state Cabinet voted to extend the deadline for taxpayers to pay pending liabilities. As a result, the proposal to alter the Meghalaya Settlement of Arrears (under the State Taxation Act) Amendment Ordinance 2022 was adopted by the Cabinet.

Lahkmen Rymbui, the Minister of the Interior, according to the reporters of The Shillong Times.

According to Rymbui, the Taxation Department’s ‘One Time Settlement of Tax’ is for those who owe money to the government.

Clearing the outstanding dues

According to the minister, some individuals /firms /agencies have previously paid a portion of the tax but have been unable to clear it completely, while others have made applications stating that they are unable to make the payment and that the deadline for settlement has passed.

“In light of this, we are allowing people who have made an application the opportunity to express their readiness to pay their outstanding debts.” “Those persons or traders who are liable to pay taxes will be able to do so under this ordinance,” Rymbui stated.

Not an extension of the scheme

He insisted, however, that this is not an extension of the scheme. “It’s only an extension for those persons who have stated their readiness to pay and have already paid a portion of their dues to the government,” he said, adding that the pending cases will bring in Rs 12 crore for the government.

The home minister stated, “There are 26 of them who have paid their full dues.”
