Locals and organizations file FIR against Oil India Limited

Locals of Baghjan in Assam’s Tinsukia district have filed an FIR against Oil India Limited after an incident of gas condensate discharge was reported from an oil well. Various organizations have also filed FIRs against Oil India Limited. The incident occurred on Wednesday when uncontrollable gas condensate discharge from an oil well owned by Oil India Limited caused panic in the Baghjan area. The gas leakage was caused by a technical issue at a suction pipe on the surface level of the BGI well in Baghjan.

Oil India Limited confirms technical glitch caused the gas leakage

OIL public relations officer Bhairab Bhuyan confirmed the development and stated that a technical glitch was detected as the well was being set up for production, which resulted in gas leaking. After sealing the well, the leakage was immediately stopped by technical specialists, according to Bhuyan.

The incident of gas leakage that occurred on Wednesday took place around three years after the Baghjan blowout of May 2020. Well no. 5 at Baghjan had been spewing gas uncontrollably since May 27, 2020, and caught fire on June 9, killing two of OIL’s firefighters.

Residents of the area have urged the government to halt all drilling activities until safety precautions are taken in the region. The Supreme Court, in August 2021, gave its verdict on the Baghjan issue, proposing 6 new committees with 4 members each.

Gas leakage

Earlier, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had appealed the Supreme Court challenging its hearing on Baghjan. Minutes of an Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) meeting of the environment ministry, held in February 2017, show that Oil India Limited had requested that it be granted permission to use the earlier public hearings.

Locals and environmental organizations have been expressing concerns about OIL’s drilling activities in the region, and incidents like the Baghjan blowout have raised questions about the company’s safety protocols. The latest incident has only added to their worries, and they have demanded action against the company.

“The incident is a clear indication that Oil India Limited has not learned any lessons from the Baghjan blowout. It is clear that Oil India Limited is not taking the safety of the local people and the environment seriously. We demand that all drilling activities be stopped immediately, and the company be held accountable for the damages caused,” said a representative of an environmental organization.

Meanwhile, Oil India Limited has assured that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure the safety of the local people and the environment. The company has also promised to cooperate with the authorities in their investigation.

“We deeply regret the incident that occurred on Wednesday, and we assure the local people that we will take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. We will also cooperate with the authorities in their investigation and take appropriate action based on their findings,” said OIL’s public relations officer Bhairab Bhuyan.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with oil drilling and the importance of taking adequate safety measures. It has also raised questions about the government’s oversight of companies like Oil India Limited and their drilling activities. The local people and environmental organizations are demanding that the government take strict action against Oil India Limited and ensure that the company takes the necessary steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

The Baghjan incident has had a significant impact on the local people and the environment, and incidents like the one that occurred on Wednesday only add to their worries. It is essential for companies like Oil India Limited to prioritize the safety of the people and the environment over profits and take adequate measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
