Bhopal: Some individuals in Bhopal pushed a lady riding pillion on a scooter to take off her headscarf on Saturday, sparking significant outrage on social media.
As per reports, the lady was riding shotgun with a man when they were stopped on a tiny street in Islam Nagar, Bhopal, and instructed her to remove her headscarf.
The video shows individuals removing her headscarf as she resisted, apparently weeping. In the footage, a male can also be heard telling the woman that she is a “disgrace” to the town.
No police report filed, 2 individuals released after warning
The individuals who had assembled there assumed the woman was with a Hindu man, so they pressured the scooter to come to a halt, according to the police.
There has been no police report filed. Two of the individuals who were spotted stopping the scooter were apprehended and released after being warned not to do it again.
“A man and the woman came to Islam Nagar in the afternoon. Some people stopped them and asked her to take off her hijab and show her face. It is suspected that the people believed the man was Hindu and the girl Muslim,” said police officer RS Verma, to the news agency PTI.
Similar pillion riding incident took place in Bengaluru, two detained
“No case has been registered but preventive action has been taken against the two men seen in the video, who were let off with a warning to not repeat such an act,” Mr Verma stated.
Two people were detained in Bengaluru last month in an instance of moral policing after a video showed them attacking a bank employee for riding pillion on his motorcycle with a Muslim women coworker.
