Kambala race winner, Nishanth Shetty is a 30 year old jockey from Mangaluru who has broken previous year’s record by completing the 100 meter race in 8.36 meters. The event was held at Dakshina Kannada on Saturday.

Nishanth Shetty had broken the previous year’s record of Shrinivas Gowda by just a few seconds difference. Gowda who was the previous champion completed the race in 8.76 seconds. Last year, the even was held at Kakkepadavu.
Nishanth completed the entire race 125 meters race in just 10.44 seconds. About 144. The race had seen almost 155 buffaloes.
What is a Kambala Race ?
The race is played across the southern states of India. This is an annual buffalo race. The race is sponsored by the landlords in the udupi and Dakshina Kanada districts of the Karnataka state. The race last from the month of November to March and is generally organized by Kambala Association.
The race is often been criticized by many on the grounds of animal cruelty. Notable Animal Right activists such as Maneka Gandhi has also raised concern about the issue. Many activists has also filed lawsuits to prevent animals from being part of the race.
