Exotic animals rescued in Assam; 1 arrested

A wallaby and five exotic animals have been rescued in Kamrup district, Assam. An arrest has also been made by the Forest Officials on Thursday. The smuggled animals were inside the arrested individual’s vehicle.

As per reports, the forest officials made the arrest based on a tip off . The accused was arrested from Hajo wherein his vehicle was intercepted and six caged animals where rescued. Officer Sangeeta Rani Singha from North Kamrup Division Range led the forest personnel team to make the arrest. Two persons were apprehended, although only one was arrested and other fled the scene.

Information regarding the transportation of these exotic animals has not been revealed yet. Assam has recently witnessed a large number of exotic animals that are unusual to spot in the region. Since the region is close to international borders, many rare animals are now being smuggled acrossed the border. Earlier, elephant tooth, tiger skin and horns of rhinos were smuggled but now rare animals from different part of the globe are being transported to international locations.

The trafficking of wild animals is a major concern in the states of northeast India which needs to be high alert at all times.
