“Did not like the car, wanted Rs lakh cash instead”: Harassed over Dowry, Kerala woman allegedly dies by suicide after sending pics of her injuries to family

A 24-year-old Ayurveda medical student, allegedly died by suicide in the bathroom of her husband’s house at Sasthamkotta district in South Kerala on Monday, June 21. As per the reports, the bride was allegedly tortured and harassed over dowry by her husband, S Kiran Kumar, an assistant motor vehicles inspector.

The harassment was merely over a car by Kumar who used to verbally abuse Vismaya’s father, saying that he deserved more dowry according to his stature but they didn’t even managed to give him anything big. A day before the incident, Vismaya sent a series of messages to the family members alleging harassment over dowry in WhatsApp where pictures of her being severely injured was seen.

The 24-year-old also alleged that her husband dragged her with her hair and also abused her verbally. As per the reports of the PTI agency, the brides father stated that he already gave 100 sovereigns of gold and over one-acre land along with a car that worths ₹10 lakh as dowry during the wedding which took place in 2020. “He did not like the car and wanted ₹10 lakh as cash instead of it. As I said it was not possible, he used to torture my daughter,” PTI quoted her father as saying.

The death of the 24-year-old, medical student has sparked anger among her folks. However, a day after the woman was found dead, the police arrested Kumar and charged him under section 304B of the Indian Penal Code(IPC) dowry death. Kumar was taken into custody last night on the basis of her family’s complaint.
