The world’s second-largest and Asia’s largest detention camp is being constructed at Goalpara at considerable speed. The camp is being built under the supervision of the Assam Police Housing department on 25 acres of land along the banks of Dudhnoi river at Matia in Goalpara district.
The centre is being constructed with a budget of Rs 64 crore. A total of 17 buildings are being built in the camp, out of which two will accommodate women. The camp will supposedly hold people who will be identified as foreigners. The camp will accommodate 3000 people in the buildings along with separate bathrooms and toilets. Along with these, 120 separate bathrooms and toilets have already been constructed.
It is to be noted that the construction for the camp just began in 2018. As per a report by Pratidin Time, almost 80 percent of the work is completed. However, there are talks among locals on whether the construction site will actually turn out to be a foreigners’ detention camp or will the jail in Goalpara be shifted here.
