Before a numbed silence fell over the crowd, some wept as the flag on the Queen’s London residence was lowered.
Hundreds of people had gathered outside the Palace braving torrential rain after it was announced that doctors had placed the monarch under medical supervision at Balmoral, Queen Elizabeth‘s Scottish estate.
The statement posted by the royal family on their official site added, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
