Tokyo Paralympics: Sports Authority of India (SAI) organises farewell dinner for the Indian contingent

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) organised a dinner event to bid farewell to the Indian contingent travelling to Japan for the Paralympics, which is scheduled to begin on August 24 in Tokyo.

54 para-athletes from nine different sports backgrounds

The showpiece event will feature a total of 54 para-athletes from nine different sports backgrounds. 

India’s biggest ever contingent to the Tokyo Paralympic Games begins here. Sources said the cakes were prepared by the hostel chef and his team, along with a send-off dinner on Friday for the athletes leaving for Tokyo.

The dinner was held on Friday by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JLN) hostel.

“Farewell dinner organized for #Paralympics bound contingent at SAI’s JLN Hostel, Delhi. The special dinner and cake was prepared by the Chef of the JLN Hostel for the athletes heading to Tokyo. Our best wishes to them,” says SAIMedia in a tweet.

Powerlifters on their way to make India proud

India’s powerlifters Sakina Khatun and Jaideep Kumar left for the Tokyo Paralympic Games on Friday along with coach JP Singh. 

As per the sources, Jaideep will be taking part in the Men’s 65 kg category, while Sakina Khatun will be taking part in the women’s 50 kg category. 

Both the powerlifters were well encouraged to complete their task on August 27 and come back with medals in their respective categories. 

Hopeful contingent got warm send-off

With a hope to earn the medal, in an interview, Jaideep said: “We have trained hard for this day. If everything goes well, we can create history and bring a medal home.” 

The contingent received a warm send-off by the officials of the Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India. Badminton and Powerlifting are the only two sports to make their debut at the Paralympic Games this time.

According to the sources, The Paralympic Games will be held between August 24 and September 5. Rio 2016 Gold Medal winner Thangavelu Mariyappan, will be the flag bearer of India.
