On Tuesday, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister, announced that all ‘Taliban sympathisers‘ who are supporting the Taliban are on the watch list of the Assam Police.
The statement came after the arrest of 14 people who were allegedly supporting the Taliban over their social media posts.
What did the CM tell?
“We have not arrested everyone; we have brought them to the police station and counseled them; they have deleted the post and gone back. We have arrested only those who show violent intent in their social media posts. Many people are on the watch list of the Assam Police,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
However, he further stated that these posts were not in support of the Taliban but in favour of armed struggle.
Why were 14 people arrested?
After 14 people were arrested for allegedly making pro-Taliban posts over social media in Assam, in this regard, Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that all ‘Taliban sympathisers’ are on the watch list of the Assam Police.
HBS directed Assam police to take action the accused
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken necessary steps against them, has instructed Assam Police to take action against the accused without “fear and favour”.
However, those 14 accused have been booked under several sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, CrPC, and IT Act.
The Assam CM asserted that there is a need for cooperation from everyone to maintain peace and harmony.
Police have warned about the social media posts
Assam police have also warned people to be cautious about such provocative social media posts, including liking them, retweeting them, asserting that their actions could lead to penal action.
