Sikkim: Heavy snowfall in high-altitude areas; records lowest temperatures

Officials reported heavy snowfall in high-altitude areas of Sikkim on Wednesday, December 29.

Constant snowfall since Tuesday night has shut down access to areas such as Lachung, Yumthang, and Lachen in North Sikkim district and Uttarey in West Sikkim district, the officials said.

The route to Tsomgo lake and Nathula has also been shut due to heavy snow.

Lowest temperatures recorded

The state capital Gangtok reported the season’s lowest minimum temperature of 3.1 degrees Celsius, the Met department said.

The temperature will drop further in the next two days, it said.

Recently, the Indian Army, rescued as many as 1027 tourists from several parts of Sikkim.

Since December 25, parts of East Sikkim bordering China – Nathu La and Tsomgo received snow resulting in vehicles and tourists being stranded in the region.
