Shasanka Deka from the Bharatiya Janata Party or the BJP emerged victorious in the recently conducted GMC elections had reportedly quit BJP on 4th May 2022 as he was not the appointed new mayor.
Shasanka Deka not appointed as New Mayor
As per reports, his decision to quit the party came after the Former Mayor Mrigen Sarania was proclaimed the new mayor. Shasanka Deka did not accept the decisions made as he had actively lobbied for the post of Mayor in Guwahati. As per reports from local media, Sanaka Deka stated that instead of him, Mrigen Sarania was chosen as the new mayor.
According to the reports, Sanaka Deka who won the GMC election from Ward Number 38 as the Ward Councillor said that he lobbied for the position of Mayor and even asked for it but it was not given to him. He further stated that he did not accept the party’s decision as they said that the new mayor was elected on the basis of the electoral process.
He said that as he is young and does not meet the required eligibility criteria, the decision was made against his favour. In addition, he said although AGP works in alliance with BJP and had backed him as the New Mayor but their recommendations were not into account.
