Protests erupt in Manipur after BJP released names of election candidates. BJP supporters burnt statues of PM Narendra Modi and Manipur CM N Biren Singh.
Protestors shouted slogans with placards and ransacked party offices.
Protests erupt as few were hoping for tickets
Reportedly, few party officers were hoping to get tickets have resigned though the exact number remained unclear.
Also according to reports, most of the unhappy leaders were those who were not selected to accommodate defectors from the Congress.
Security has been stepped up
Security has been stepped up around the BJP headquarters in Imphal as protests rage.
As per information, at least 10 former Congress leaders who joined the BJP were given tickets.
About the elections
CM N Biren Singh will be contesting from Heingang. Minister Biswajit Singh, will be contesting from Thongju seat. Also former national footballer Somatai Saiza will contest from Ukhrul.
Further, BJP sources mentioned in the 2017 election, the BJP won 21 seats but formed the government with the help of smaller parties and independent MLAs.
Also, they added, of which, 19 MLAs have been given party tickets and three have been canceled.
BJP of Manipur has listed only 3 women and 1 Muslim candidate. Also, former Manipur Congress chief who joined the BJP, Govindas Konthoujam, has got a party ticket.
Manipur BJP election in-charge Bhupendra Yadav said, “BJP will contest all the 60 seats and will get a majority on its own. The Modi government has ensured that Manipur will get a stable government and will continue to ensure the development and peace of the region.”
